“Art is the imposing of a pattern on experience, and our aesthetic enjoyment is recognition of the pattern.” – Alfred North Whitehead
“Last Thoughts”, the Weekend Edition, combines a quote with a favorite photo. I tailor these to the WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge theme which, this week, is “Pattern”.
A couple of weeks ago, I went to the Catskills for a meditation retreat. During some of my free time there, I was continually drawn to the patterns of the bare branches, taking multiple photographs from different angles.
At one point, one of my instructors came by and asked me what on earth I was taking a photograph of. “The pattern of the branches,” I explained, and showed her. She thought it was pretty neat, and asked for a copy to be emailed to her.
I was kind of surprised that she didn’t know what I was shooting, but that’s also because I see patterns everywhere. I think that, as a photographer, my eye is automatically used to framing what I see as a photograph. Wherever I look, I often see something worth shooting. It may be as simple as the pattern, colors and shapes of the Italian marble in a floor…
…or the way my bulletin board looks in the side of my room.
Beautiful photographs are everywhere. You just have to look for them.
Happy Aloha Friday!
