Last thoughts: Silhouette (the WordPress weekly photo challenge)

Tree in Silhouette, Kennebunkport, Maine – © 2012 Karina Chapman

“Trees are the earth’s endless effort to speak to the listening heaven.” Rabindranath Tagore

As always, the Friday Edition combines a quote with a favorite photo. I tailor these to the WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge theme, which this week is “silhouette”.

It’s a very cool day on the coast of Maine. The trees are rapidly changing from yellow to brown, and as I drove to the soccer field this morning, I was showered with cascading, fluttering leaves.

The seasons are definitely changing. Although the sky today is a brilliant blue, the winds are chill. As we watch the game, we sit wrapped in quilts and blankets to stay warm.

It feels right to see the trees silhouetted against the sky, knowing that very soon these fields will be covered in snow. Winter is surely coming, and with it, a period of quiet, rest, and reflection that I can’t wait to enjoy.

For the first eight months of this year, my blog was my daily, or almost-daily, source of quiet and reflection. Once school started, I found myself too busy to write. I am consumed with planning, teaching, correcting, commuting, and even attending physical therapy three times a week in an attempt to heal my injuries so that I can once again run.

I love my school, and I’m thrilled to be able to teach science and social studies, my two favorite subjects. However, I hope the winter brings a bit more quiet into my life.

But not today. Today, the field echoes with shouts and cheers as the kindergarten girls play their last soccer game of the season.

Here’s wishing you a lovely week.

Aloha!
