“Your big opportunity may be right where you are now.” – Napoleon Hill
As always, the Friday Edition combines a quote with a favorite photo. I tailor these to the WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge theme, which this week is “Big”.
All right. So it’s not big in size. But it’s big in ideas.
I found out today that the application I put in to attend a TEDx conference, TEDx Women in Washington, D.C., was accepted. I’m in!
If you don’t know TED, you need to check it out. TED is short for “Technology, Entertainment, and Design”, and the TED conferences are a cross between science, culture, and storytelling. They inspire creativity, thought, and change.
TED’s mission:
We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and ultimately, the world. So we’re building here a clearinghouse that offers free knowledge and inspiration from the world’s most inspired thinkers, and also a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other.
I have watched in envy over the past few years as others have attended the big TED conferences. With a price tag in the thousands of dollars for a single ticket, I knew I would not likely be able to attend one of them myself–at least, not unless I won the PowerBall. However, when I found out about TEDx Women, I knew I could manage that. And I applied, which is what you have to do. Applications to attend TEDx involve answering questions about your background, your passions, your hobbies, and what makes you tick. They want to know who you are–and they want to know what you love.
Today I received my notification that my application was accepted. I had given up on the conference, figuring there was no way I’d get to go. And suddenly, I’m in!
Going to a TED conference has been a goal of mine. I LOVE the TED talks! And to go to a conference whose focus is women’s issues is even better. Washington DC will be the center hub for the worldwide TEDx women’s conferences that will be going on that weekend–other sites will be live-streaming from remote locations.
And I get to be there.
This is BIG!
Aloha!

This is fantastically big! Congratulations on their accepting your application.

Interestingly, I found out today one of my partner teachers went to a TEDx in southern California last year. She plans to go again next year. I’m in good company!
