What’s lurking in your photo archives?

Gunther Kitty - photo by Karina Chapman

Today has been a busy day, doing all sorts of work around the house, and there was also a doctor appointment with my Mom-in-law.

Finally, after dinner I had my first chance to start digging through my photo archives. Wow. I only looked at some of the photographs from the past six to eight months, but I found a number of things that I had totally forgotten.

There was our drive across country, which included stops in Las Vegas and St. Louis…

There was a quiet afternoon spent in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City with my husband…

There was the drive we took along the coast the day after Hurricane Irene barreled inland, largely missing Maine, but devastating Vermont…

And there was my cat, Gunther, who went to Kitty Heaven back in 2004. Somehow this photo ended up in my archives from the last year. I’m not quite sure how.

It was fun going through these, but (aside from Gunther Kitty) they’re still too close. They’re too fresh. I think tomorrow I need to go through some of the older DVDs.

Below are some of the photos I pulled out today. I had completely forgotten about some of these.

Have you started plundering your photo archives yet? What’s the most surprising photo you found? Did you find one that you had totally forgotten about? Was there one that, after seeing it with new eyes, you decided was really excellent?

I would love to see what you have dug out of your archives–please consider sharing a link to your photographs in the comments section below.

To start the sharing…here are a few of mine.

  2. I found some old undeveloped film a few years ago, and when I got them developed it made so glad for digital. out of the 36 prints about half were either out of focus some not even printed. and other had little labels of advice. But what were good brought the memory of the time. Now I am trying to get some old scrap book/diary’s scan and preserved…thanks for your lovely post..

    • I found some old negatives a couple years ago, and took them to Costco to have them scanned and made into a DVD, since my scanner died before then (and it was horrible before that).

I was delighted to find old negativess from 1981 of my brother’s ship, the USS Somers, coming into port at Pearl Harbor, and I used those to make him a scrapbook, because he runs a Somers memorial webpage (it has since been scuttled). He was thrilled.

But the real keepers were the roll of my Dad at work at the National Guard. I had photos of him all over, doing all his various tasks, interacting with people–he worked in the maintenance facility, and he was a federal (every day) employee as well as a First Sergeant. Those were at least 20 years old, and I made him a scrapbook of those too. I was shocked–he started flipping through, then realizing what it was, he cried! He didn’t know any of those photos existed, other than the one or two we had printed into 8×10 way back when.

These were all done in B&W so it was exciting to put them together into a modern-day scrapbook for him.

It’s amazing what is tucked away and archived. My cds today: 2007. My littlest wasn’t even a year old then. Wow. Can’t wait to go look. :)

Have fun with the scrapbooks/diaries. A suggestion for the scrapbooks: if the pages are removable, take them out, and set them on the floor, and photograph them using your best camera and a tripod. I made duplicates of scrapbooks for my Mom this way, and printed them as 8×8 sized–a bit smaller, but she has copies now of stuff that is actually at my Uncle’s house in Italy.

      • Why thank you so much for your wonderful reply. my scanner is working well and scans at high resolution, becomes a lot slower to but results are worth it. I have made up scrapbooks of holidays etc with photos and writing and included a disc. thinking of updating to flash drives. Thank you Karina will keep reading your post…

      • Those scrapbooks with discs are a brilliant idea. I wish I’d thought of that!

  4. Awesome photos! What a treasure … Gunther was really a handsome lad! The last one almost looks like it could be the Bush compound.

I’ve started a little. My archives don’t go back all that long, and I remember them all. It’s fun though … I’ll do more, this is a nice project..

    • Gunther was a great cat with a huge personality and a gorgeous face. We miss him still.

Good call on the last one–that’s exactly what it is. :)

A tidbit that all Mainers learn: when the Texas flag is flying at Walker’s Point, the Bush family is in residence. So they were home for the hurricane…which was impressive. Back in 1991 a hurricane really devastated that house, so I hear. Knowing Irene was coming, they could have easily left, but at least someone was home for it.
